The Russell Masonic Lodge, through the Kororareka Charitable Trust, is pleased to offer Sponsored Voyages for up to 5 students for Spring 2012. The places will be made available on either the September or October voyages which will entail a 7-day voyage on the R Tucker Thompson for a course in Leadership, Teamwork, Confidence and Seamanship.
If you reside in the Russell, Opua, Waikare or Eastern Bay of Islands/Rawhiti locale, are aged between 13 – 18 years of age, have goals and aspirations and particularly if you have achieved in some way through sport, education, music, community service, work etc, particularly if your socio-economic circumstances made this difficult for you, we would love to hear from you.
In the first instance, please contact the Secretary, Kororareka Masonic Lodge, Box 228, Russell, with your name, date of birth, address and a brief explanation of your background, parental situation, adversities, achievements, goals, objectives and why you think you should be chosen for such a voyage. An application form is provided to assist you below.
Please note: Applications will close on 15th July and some placements have already been made so please apply early!
The R. Tucker Thompson is an accredited service provider for New Zealand’s Children,Youth and Families Service (CYFS). For the past 14 years, we have been providing seven-day sail training voyages for young people identified as being at risk.
If you are an organisation that is funded and accredited by CYFS, works closely with young people or consider that you can refer young people who are at risk of poor life outcomes, whether this be low educational achievement, poor social skills or general life outcomes, then please contact us to see if our funding can be applied.

We are delighted to announce that Northport are sponsoring a voyage for young people who live in the area associated with the Port operations. A highlight of this voyage will be a visit to the port for a behind the scenes look at what goes on.
To be eligible for the voyage, youngsters must be living in either the Ruakaka, One Tree Point or Whangarei Heads area.
To be accepted for the voyage applicants must find the flowing information from the Northport website
- List the five key Marine Operations of Northport
- Name some of the community groups that benefit from Northport’s commitment to “working with the community”
- List 4 of the 7 environmental activities monitored by Northport in “protecting our Environment”.
- List 5 service providers who benefit and contribute to the Port and its many customers.
Each student must also submit an item “What Northport means to me” this may be a poem, drawing, essay or any other suitable presentation.

The Wairahi Trust has generously agreed to sponsor a voyage for Northland students undertaking their Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Awards.
This voyage will be held in the October school holidays and a total of 10 places are available for this sponsorship. Other Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Awards participants are also welcome to undertake a youth development voyage on board the R.Tucker Thompson but this will be at the normal charges.

Far North Holdings have been regular supporters of our youth development voyages, specifically assisting youngsters that live in the Far North District.
With responsibility for majority of the District’s maritime assets, including Opua Marina and Ashby’s Boatyard they play a significant role in the maritime industry and our marine environment. This includes support of the R.Tucker Thompson’s youth programme based in Far North Holdings area of operation.
Far North Holdings’ sponsorship is targeted for youngsters at schools in the Far North District that demonstrate leadershipship potential that would otherwise not be able to afford the cost of the voyage.
