We are about 3 weeks into our annual maintenance and it’s all go! Quick as a flash it seems, the crew rip the ship apart (hope they know where all the nuts and bolts have been put) and they’re in to it!
Crew members Wayne, Rob, Kylie and Jaana prove to be amazing at sanding and varnishing, Steve’s been up the rigging applying tar. Sam is busy running around organising supplies and materials and has already maxed out his credit card. The ship has already slipped at Ashby’s for her survey, hull cleaning and antifoul and is now back in the water.
Pub Charity have generously provided a $25,000 to help with this year’s programme and we have saved up some funds from reserves to hopefully do the rest. And thanks to a generous donation from a long time supporter, we’ve also got enough money to finally replace the Cap Rail this year which is awesome, something we thought would have to get put off yet again.
We have some awesome volunteers again this year. Stewie Kahn, one of the original builders of the ship way back when happened to chance by with his daughter Kali…. nec minit Stewie’s back in harness helping with the Cap Rail project.
Russell of course is down there lending a hand and the stories that are being remembered are truly wonderful! Nearly 30 years later they can’t remember all the detail but having heaps of fun trying to remember. Darren May, a former sail trainee (and Birdman jumper) has also been grafting hard – awesome work and much appreciated. Some outstanding muffins arrive almost daily baked by Mitch so we are not faring badly!
Come on down if you want to lend a hand, we’re on a mission to get everything back together by 30 August!
