YTH-1305 Day 1
It was a beautiful sunny morning, with a gentle breeze that greeted our sail trainees joining us for this voyage. They hailed from all points across Tai Tokerau – from Kaitaia in the real far North, Hokianga in the West, Kaikohe in the mid North, Kerikeri in the Bay of Islands, further south from Whangarei and south east from Ruakaka. All were welcomed on board and off they set, looking nervously back at their whanau, friends and siblings waving back to them from the shore. Off for 7-days of adventure at sea. The first day was busy,...

Greetings from the good ship to thy land lubbers …… This morning we were greeted by liquid sunshine as we went for our morning mineral spa to wash thy sleepy eyes then it was straight into chores and breakfast our usual morning routine. Then we got ‘Little Tuc’, our rowboat, into the water and raced around the mother ship in teams of two. The trainees battled each other for the fastest time Breanna and Clayton claiming victory with a time of 01:17 Well done!!!! After the ‘Little Tuc’ races, we had lunch and then pulled up the...

Kiaora everyone!!! We have had another great day today onboard the good ship. Cramming in as much as possible while the weather is good, everyone is getting right amongst it! We have travelled far and wide around the bay today, out to the famous ‘Hole in the Rock’ for a bit of a ride through in the dingy, the swell giving an exhilarating ride through and stirring up the sea enough to see schools of trevally and kingfish feeding, a fantastic sight. The wind was very light so we have only a few sails up as we motor along, over to visit the...

Kia ora te Whanau , the fourth day of our voyage and our trainees have become acclimatized to the morning swim, they awoke sometime before 0600 and were champing at the bit to get in the water. It is amazing what the reward of a chocolate slab can do.!! William was the first in the water so he won the prize. After a hearty breakfast, we set sail out to sea and prepared our dropline with whole Piper and Koheru from yesterdays baitnetting excursion. Captain Steve took us to a ‘secret spot’ out deep to try for a Kingfish or a Hapuka, so we...

Kiaora koutou. It was a still night in Paroa Bay last night. We all got up early this morning to see the dolphins swimming around the ship. By the time the sun had risen enough for our morning swim, they had gone, but there was no hesitation to get in the water, despite the chill. Everyone has learned to get straight in, and not linger in the cold morning air, then the hot shower is your reward. This morning it was Kylie and Cassy first in. We have had a few tries at catching some fish today, but to no avail. Plenty of small ones, and a few...

Its been a stunning day in the Bay today. The trainees had their first taste of the morning swim, with Te Haerenga Mai (Wowo) making the first splash. The hot shower on deck was well received after the swim, as it was quite nippy with the slight southeasterly. We spent the morning sailing across to Black Rocks, with all the sails set. Ebony, Breanna and Paige having fun on the bowsprit, singing songs at the top of their lungs, Tim and Chance showing off their monkey skills, unfurling the topsails aloft. There was a keen group of snorkellers...

Kia Ora Whanau, a great first day aboard the ‘good ship’ has been enjoyed by all. Our new sailors have been getting to know each other and are exploring the ship, they have climbed the rig, the bowsprit and had a swim at Palm tree bay. After a scrummy soup and scone lunch we set sail and sailed a lap of the islands. Tim and Chance are showing confidence aloft and Mandy was the first to brave the water with Wowo following behind. Ebony and Breanna took turns steering the ship and thanks to Captain Steve’s guidance we missed all the...

Foul weather returned but that doesn’t worry the crew any more. So bright and early after breakfast and chores we left Whangamumu. Slight swell but no challenge for the good ship and hardened sailors. A little bit of liquid sunshine, plenty of wind and plenty of green water on deck to catch out the unwary. Once coming around the Hole in the Rock north east winds were perfect to sail our way to Waewaetorea island. The Skippers favourite sail was up and good time was made. At the island we dropped the pick, went ashore to stretch thy...

Sunshine!!!!!!! Finally a sunny warm day to go exploring!!! It was up early today, and straight into chores, brekky, and off to Deep Water Cove… Our morning swim happened in the form of a dive on white reef, amoungst the fishes and kina galore. The clarity in the water was good, considering the wild weather for yesterday. All the wet washing came out to the clotheslines, and we the warmth on skin was embraced full heartedly.. After our dive, we set sail around Cape Brett, and into the dingy for an explore in The Hole In The Rock!!!...

Well, it’s been another wet and wild day today. It was a stormy night, last night, and the ships’s anchor held strong in the sticky mud of Orokawa. There was still a fair gale when we woke for our swim, so needless to say, it was a very quick dip in the sea this morning. We made a shore excursion to collect some pipi and stretch the legs, all rugged up for the cold wind.. After a decadent morning tea, we weighed anchor and set out for a peek at the wild sea. It was a howling headwind, and in tawhirimateas jest, it started to pour with rain...
