day one at sea

Once the boys and girls wiped away their tears from the farewells we set out for the high seas. And high the seas they were! With a one and a half meter swell rolling into Brampton reef, Elise, Cheyenne, Harold, Ginny, Levi, Jesse, Terri, Steven, Emma, Samual and Ashlyn all geared up their harnesses to meet the swell head on at the bow-sprit. After rounding the Cape of Tapeka, our course turned for the sheltered waters that Roberton Island provided from the northerly swell. Wayne’s lunch of pumpkin soup and scones were ravaged down before we...

Heading home

Sunday! the day of rest. We awoke at 7am to another sunny morning and went for the usual morning swim. After all the chores were done Annaliese had prepared an amazing banana pancake breakfast! Church service came next with Ben saying a few words and everyone sang a few songs. Our trainees decided they needed another swim to wake themselves up and get ready for a trip to the Hole in the Rock. Teagan and Tayla helped Janna prepare a scrumptious pizza lunch. On arrival at Hole in the Rock we went for a lovely dinghy ride through the rock and...

Mimiwhangata to Poor Knights to Whangamumu

Tena koutou Whanau , another day of adventure has unraveled for the crew aboard ‘the Good Ship’. At 0400hrs a bleary eyed, motley bunch of sailors emerged from their cocoons to a clear, moonlit morning. Our seasoned sailors sprung? into action and went about their assigned duties with Aiden and Josh climbing the rig to unfurl the topsails in the dark. Other sailors were busy raising the anchor, raising the main, fore and head sails like a well oiled machine. It was a fantastic moonlit sail out to the Poor Knights Islands. After a hearty...

Whangamumu to Mimiwhangata

Kia Ora whanau! Today we awoke to another beautiful morning in Whangamumu Bay, followed shortly by the screams of young people as they jumped into the water at 7am. After a quick breakfast we went on our first land adventure to explore the whaling station and a short hike to see a waterfall. Later in the morning we set sail to a nice rocky bay east of home point. The trainees are really starting to get the feel of the ship and it won’t be long before they’ll be running it themselves. The fishing was decent but the crayfish still managed to...

Around ‘the Cape’

Hello all and apologies if this tale of adventure doesn’t reach you tonight as we are anchored in Whangamumu tonight and our reception isn’t good. A dawn service at 0600 to remember the ANZACs and a minute’s silence and a few words was how we started the day. Our morning swim was in the rain, heaps of fun !! With breakfast devoured our new navigators plotted the ship’s course around Cape Brett to Te Wi bay. We set off and had a great sail to ‘the Cape’ with heaps of fish schools seen. We anchored in Te Wi bay and Janna,...

First day

Ahoy there me hearties, a fine, sunny day greeted our good ship and her new crew of twelve keen young trainees. After the orientation and safety briefs we set off to Onewhero bay for a swim and hot soup for lunch. Our rope swing was put to good use with Tayla, Aidan and Cody pulling off some spectacular splashes. With the swim all done, it was time to hoist the sails and head off into the bay to teach our new trainees the ‘ropes’. A few hours passed, a tack here and a tack there and our new crew were handling the ship like old hands. As...

day six, the storm riders

Another lovely day in paradise!…..Greetings from the good ship to ye land lubbers. The start of the day began as the rest of them did, with a nice refreshing mineral spa to wash them sleepy eyes. It was blowing about 20knots and visibility was down to about 100m…Once wide awake and energized, it was straight into daily chores and a hearty feast fit for kings. After dishes it was time to sit around the round table for lessons, consisting of identification of buoys and beacons, rules of the road, weather and tides summed up with the famous...
