Ahoj from the Good Ship R.Tucker Thompson. A bit of a wet start but not with the enthusiasm of the trainees. Leaving Opua we rolled around Tapeka Point and into the Bay of Islands. Anchoring up in Wai iti for lunch, a warming soup with fresh scones and then an introduction to Project Island Song before going ashore to explore the island of Moturua with interest in looking for the recently released Kakariki.
Back on board it was hoist the tender, then haul the anchor, out came the harnesses and Cameron, David, Kateao and Karlos were soon climbing the rigging testing themselves out. Now at anchor in Paroa Bay, sheltered with the galley offering up sweet aromas of dinner. A little introduction to class and their work manual for the week. The 30 minute silence period is always an interesting call on the first day with sighs of relief as we reach the target and conversation and laughter return to below decks.
