Happy birthday to you, happy birthday good ship R. Tucker Thompson, happy birthday to you. Today, 27 years ago, the good ship R Tucker Thompson was launched at Mangawhi. It was momentous day back then for all involved and today we celebrated in having an equally awesome day. An early 4 am start saw everyone on deck, weighing anchor, unfurling sails and wondering what would greet us at the Poor Knights Islands. We sailed slowly on a gentle rolling sea with all eyes fixed on the horizon awaiting the morning sunrise.

The golden ball rose, as if on cue, just behind the island as we neared the northern end, absolutely magnificent.!! Genesis and Te Rehia had the best view from the portside shrouds. The sea was flat andshimmering with fish as we neared our dive spot. Wetsuits were donned and into the water we went. What a great dive !! Snapper everywhere, Kingfish cruising, trevally on the surface and a myriad of pretty little fishes. What a place to dive for our first time snorkellers, Sam, Mikayla and Chevrolet. After our three hour dive we boarded the ship and motored to Rikoriko cave for another amazing adventure in the dinghy. On our return, Kylie, had prepared a birthday lunch,, a crayfish, scallop and fish mornay, marinated mussels, and hot dogs. With all our bellies full, we set sails and an increasing Northerly breeze promised of a great sail. After an hour into the sail and an updated weather forecast, Captain Steve, decided against going to Tutukaka, and to sail to Whangarei Heads instead for a better anchorage. Great !! More time sailing !! We are still sailing at the moment and should be anchored by 7 pm tonight. What a massive day !! I wish everyone’s birthday could be like this, Happy Birthday Good ship.
