What a start to a youth voyage! Our young seafarers have had a full day of sailing and introduction to life on the sea. Everyone handled the ½ meter seas and winds and grey skies cheerfully and with gusto.
Leaving Whangarei Harbour was flat and beautiful in the shadow of the majestic cliffs of Whangarei Heads. After unpacking and setting the mainsail, lunch was served and eaten heartily. Orientation and safety talks came next. Then some freedom to head out on the bowsprit and ride the waves or climb the lower rigging. Many took turns at helming (steering) the ship as we passed our way up the coast. It took 4 hours to reach our destination of Tutukaka Harbour. Inside the harbour it was much more sheltered. Now the rain is starting to fall and dinner is nearly ready. Spirits are high and already the chatter is loud amongst the new friends.
We hope all those at home are as warm and happy, as we are cosy in our little ship.
