We’re hiring – Operations Manager

The R. Tucker Thompson Sail Training Trust invites applications from leaders who are interested in delivering our kaupapa Learning for Life Through the Sea as the Operations Manager.

The role is designed to provide operational, management, and administrative support to ensure the effective delivery of our youth development, commercial sailings, and maintenance programmes. The role will oversee all areas of the organisation’s marine operations, both in the office and on board the vessel.

The R. Tucker Thompson, Northland’s own tall ship, is held in a Charitable Trust and based in Opua. During winter we take rangatahi on 7-day youth development voyages and in summer we offer day sails for visitors to Northland. The ship is a traditional gaff-rigged top’sl schooner based in the Bay of Islands, and our operations are focused on the development of our rangatahi in Tai Tokerau.

Candidates with an interest in Tikanga Maori, youth development and leadership, and with a growth mindset, would be ideal. This role is full-time and the hours are variable depending on the season. The position would suit someone adventurous, passionate about square-rig sailing, positive, and keen to learn. A marine background is desirable. The Operations Manager will work closely with management, and the marketing, administration and maintenance teams.

The Operations Manager is an integral part of the organisation. Strong leadership skills and a positive attitude, focused on getting things done, are essential. The Operations Manager will lead our team, working with management to deliver a world-class product for all who sail with us.
