Senior Master – Skipper

The R. Tucker Thompson Sail Training Trust invites applications from leaders who are interested in delivering our kaupapa Learning for Life Through the Sea as the Senior Master on The Good Ship, the R. Tucker Thompson.

The R. Tucker Thompson is Northland’s own tall ship and is held in a Charitable Trust and based in Opua. During winter we take Tai Tokerau rangatahi youth on 7-day youth development voyages and in summer we offer day sails for visitors to Northland. The ship is a traditional gaff-rigged top’sl schooner based in the Bay of Islands.

The Senior Master is an integral part of the organisation. They lead our team at sea, and work with management to deliver a world-class professional product for all who sail with us.

The role includes leading our summer sailings, our 7-day Youth Development Voyages, and is a key member of our maintenance projects each year. The role is multifaceted: it involves sailing and maintaining a tall ship, outdoor education, working with youth, managing our crew and also delivering a high quality tourism product.The Senior Master will ensure the overall performance of the crew in delivering the ‘best day of their holiday’ for tourism passengers, and ‘life changing’ experiences for sail trainees on Youth Development voyages.

Candidates with an interest in Tikanga Maori, youth development, leadership and a growth mindset would be ideal. This role is full-time and the hours are variable depending on the season. The position would suit someone adventurous, passionate about square rig sailing. positive and keen to learn. The senior master will work closely with the maintenance team and Bosun to manage the maintenance and repair of the ship.

We are seeking a Senior Master with experience in marine engineering, a mind for maintenance and a focus to take care of our vessel. Strong leadership skills and a positive attitude focused on getting things done is imperative.



  • ILM certificate of competency (ring-fenced) or SRL endorsed to 24m and endorsed to carry more than 12 passengers
  • Appropriate experience as Master
  • Tall Ship or classic ship sailing experience involving traditional/gaff-rigged vessels
  • Good track record of safety and safety procedures
  • Proven ability to manage a crew for voyages
  • Marlinspike and maintenance skills
  • Leadership skills and growth mindset
