YTH 2504 – Rā Tuarua – Day 2

Day two, so much to do, the sun is rising and so are you!
Up with the sun, we went for a swim, a race around the ship, who will win?
Bodies refreshed, it’s time for chores, scrubbing the deck and finding brooms behind doors. “Breakfast time!” Arihi calls from the galley, as trainees gather in the saloon in a hurry. Toast, eggs, porridge and butter, as they wolfed their food, we heard not even a stutter.

That’s it for rhyming due to my timing, there are trainees on deck who need supervising.Following a tasty hot breakfast and sail station meetings, it was time for the trainees to climb the rigging, up and over down the other side. They put in a fantastic effort, with ten of them making it all the way to the top! A line handling lesson and it was time to set sail. “Raise the anchor! Hoist the main!” We set out for the Black Rocks, where those who wanted were given the opportunity to jump from some of the lower rocks.

Following a warming lunch of soup and garlic bread, we sailed on, practicing manoeuvres in our sail stations. The trainees have been fast learners, managing their stations well and keeping the lines neat and tidy. Anchored for the night we are in Paradise Bay, and the name could not be any truer. It seems we’re in for a beautiful sunset this evening, as the smells of a tasty chicken curry waft through the ship.
