YTH2507 – Rā Tuarua – Day 2

Our second day began with a morning swim around the ship. It was brisk but we soon warmed up. Soon after we jumped into our chores and breakfast. A big warm breakfast to start our day. Crew members took us through line handling and terminology to prepare us for our sail ahead. We lifted anchor and sailed inside the bay. We learnt how to tack, tacking the ship back through the bay until we reached Motuarohia. We anchored up there for a much needed lunch break. Pumpkin rice risotto. An incredible bird came to see us. We’ve never seen this before, a Southern Giant Petrel. The biggest marine bird we’ve ever seen. After lunch we were keen to explore the island and head up the lookout. While there we learnt about the marine mammal sanctuary and why it’s so important for the Bay of Islands. We explored the lagoon, skimmed rocks and enjoyed our moment ashore. The day was getting away on us and we still need to make-way to our night anchorage Awaawaroa Bay. Once there we look forward to our curried chicken meal, made by the Captain. Tonight we will reflect on the day, play some ship games and hope for an early lights out time. “ we’re so tired” means I’ve had a full day. Until tomorrow. Po marie.
