How we’re funded

Our youth development voyages have a unique funding model; like sailing a tall ship, it takes teamwork. The cost of a 7-day voyage is valued at $2,570 per trainee, and funding for each trainee placement is split three ways.

1. We raise funds

For students from the Tai Tokerau Northland region, the Trust provides a subsidy to reduce the price. We provide funds for the subsidy from surpluses from our tourism activity and from generous donations. All guests who sail with us contribute to our kaupapa. Generous donations also help to make up our contribution.

2. Grant Scheme

We offer a Grant Scheme, under which trainees from Tai Tokerau can apply for funding for their voyage. We source funding from a large number of grants and sponsorships, and we use an application process through which trainees apply for the amount of funds relevant to their individual circumstances.

3. Every trainee contributes

Each trainee is asked to contribute toward their voyage. This may involve fundraising, seeking sponsorship outside of our Grant Scheme, or working for the funds. We can also help with fundraising ideas. The amount that is contributed by each trainee is based on the resources available and the individual circumstances of their whānau.

Supporting the Tucker

This unique funding model underpins our success: we invite you to come aboard! We have some incredible businesses and individuals that donate their time and money to the Tucker.
