YTH 2412 – Rā Tuawhā – day 4

Today started with a very chilly dip in the ocean! The wind had swung well into the south over night and had a real nip to it. Despite the cold it was beautifully sunny and we all jumped into the water with big grins before jostling for a spot under the warm shower head.

Connor’s left over lamb boil up, mixed with poached eggs and baked beans made an odd but very hearty breakfast. Every one tucked in big time and the hot kettle of Milo went round a few times.

Not long after we were in the dinghy headed for the beach. We took a long walk up the hill then headed off along the ridge at the hill tops, after awhile we found ourselves in a spectacular grove of kauri trees. Here we took our half hour of silence. We spaced ourselves out and took time to contemplate life and nature. Or just sleep….. as some of us choose to do.
After running back down the hill we had another very hearty lunch of pumpkin soup and toasty bread, before splitting the group in half so some could go for another walk out along the peninsular. Getting excellent views of the very windy ocean outside. The rest of us braved the cold again and went for a quick snorkel. Picking up a few crayfish and kina on the way, these and a John Dory and a few snapper caught during lunch time have us well set for an awesome feed tonight.

keep warm everybody! Mā te wā
