This morning our day began at 0530. We got up out of bed, put on our warm clothes and life jackets, and went ashore in the tender. The birds were waking up and light was just coming into the day as we walked up to the concrete Observation Point at Army Bay, Waiwhapuku, Moturua. We sat in there and thought about what it might have been like for people in the wars and shared stories of anyone we knew from our families that had been involved in one way or another. We remembered. We came out of the OP, sat on top and, as the sun rose over Rakaumangamanga, we focused on how to keep making the most of the world we have now.
Back at the ship, we did our first morning swim, had brekkie cooked by our captain and completed our first lot of ship chores. We are a tidy bunch and the crew are impressed! From here, we learned about emergency procedures and line handling. We got into our sail stations; did our engine check, navigation and anchor duties; and set our sails for the Black Rocks. The winds were light and it proved to be a great time of practice. Some of us even got up the rigging and out on the bowsprit!
Once anchored at Black Rocks, we had an amazing stir fry lunch and went for a cliff jump and a snorkel. We are now sailing again back across towards Moturua in preparation for joining the Project Island Song weeding team at Mangahawea tomorrow morning. The deck looks amazing, lovely coils and fast learners here. Some of them are now cooking Anzac biscuits and we’re looking forward to chicken dinner.
Arohanui our family and friends. We will tune back in tomorrow evening!
