YTH2315 – Rā Tuarua – Day Two

Good evening whanau,

Today was filled with highs and lows, but this evening we’re hunkered down on the ship in Otupoho, Homestead Bay on Moturua. It’s been a wild day of weather, and we took the opportunity to get out sailing! We had a moment of sunshine this morning and we prepared ourselves at our first sail stations, learning about handling the lines and setting our sails. It wasn’t long after we upped anchor that we were heading out past Urupukapuka into rolling deep sea swells. Tāwhirimātea showed us no mercy today as he blasted us with 25kn of wind and some mega rain, and he had our ship rocking and rolling and most of us slipping and sliding around on the deck as waves washed over the rails. A moment of discomfort determined a change of plans and we tacked back into the Bay to spend the afternoon exploring Awaawaroa Bay. We split into a few teams, a group of avid fisher people, some keen survivalists wanting to build a bush hut, and some humble bakers who whipped up a big batch of cookies for everyone. On our final journey of the day around the corner to our current anchorage, we were greeted by the friendly pod of local dolphins who showed off some incredible moves as the sun set over the horizon

Pō Marie, until tomorrow
