YTH2319a – Ra Tuatahi – Day One

Today we traveled from our home locations to our good ship. The bad weather decided to invite itself which has created a unique start to our voyage so far. We began with a karakia onto the ship, followed by unpacking and a ship orientation. Chef Arihi cooked an amazing mac and cheese lunch with hot chocolates to keep morale high. After lunch we were taught how to handle lines and line terminology such as making fast, coiling lines and sweating and tailing. We had a quick game of orientation and pointed out locations and items on deck before heading below for more hot chocolate. Some of us stayed warm and some decided to go for a swim. The water was actually warm and enjoyable, followed by more hot chocolates to keep us warm and in high spirits. Chef Rachel and Maia cooked a wonderful shepherd’s pie which warmed the soul. We’re hunkered down in Opua for the night, waiting the weather out and looking forward to what the next day brings. Be safe out there! Stay tuned for more updates!
