YTH2505 – Rā Tuarua – Day 2

Today started with a splash! Off the rocks, not the ship. Being at the Black rocks for the night an early morning leap from the rocks was on the cards for all. A dinghy ride back to the ship then a quick hot shower before getting on with the morning chores to keep warm.

Breakfast was soon served and everyone tucked in. With full bellies we got on with some line handling and rig climbing lessons. Today’s plan was to sail north to Whangaroa harbour with the southerly breeze at our backs. We were soon underway, charging along at 7 knots (pretty quick for this old ship!). The wind swung and strengthened through the day giving us plenty of opportunity to keep practicing our sail handling as we slid along. Hot soup and cheese rolls for lunch, everyone braced as the ship heeled right over while we ate. Sunset saw us motoring in through the Whangaroa harbour entrance and we’re soon at anchor in the mirror calm waters of Lane cove. Some folk swimming and jumping from the ship while others try to catch fish and swap yarns at the stern. A beautiful day on the water.
