YTH2319A – Rā Tuaono – Day Six

Our day began with our second to last morning dip in the paradise that is Paradise Bay! We had a great musical wake up from the trainees, today is their day to take control and run the ship themselves!

After a swift run through of our daily tasks, we all gathered for a karakia before digging into the stack of pancakes cooked on the BBQ. Now it was time for us (the trainees) to put all our knowledge, skills and fearlessness to the test and plan out our route to Te Pahi. Every role of the ship is key. Jazz was put forward as captain with Luke as her first mate. The mighty main sail team was Max, Jorga and Izrael. The sturdy midships was Lachlan, Jacoby and Sean. And the hearty headsails were Honekai, Jamie and Nathan.

The sail began with some wild wet weather to add to the adventure. Everyone performed their roles seamlessly and required little assistance from the crew. We arrived safely to our lunch destination Motuarohia Island and got to enjoy a delicious hot meal from Tom which warmed us up immediately after a good morning’s work. We then got stuck into some fishing right as the lovely sun came out for our afternoon sail.

We arrived at Te Pahi safely at the hands of our trainees at 1600 hrs with plenty of time to soak up the sun rays. Some fished again and others went ashore for an explore of the land. We’re all very excited for the hearty roast cooked by Arihi tonight, the divine smells from the galley have been filling the boat since lunchtime!

Tonight we get to do some self reflection while watching the sunset before our last day tomorrow! Maybe a game of spotlight too!

Excitement to see our friends and families again is building but we will also be sad to leave the ship and those we have spent the week with.

See you all tomorrow!
