YTH 2501 – Rā Tuarima – Day 5

Everyone must’ve had a good night’s sleep last night as we had trainees ready to jump in at 0655 this morning. Clear sky’s with minimal wind it was great conditions for it and the water was warm. Chores and breaky followed. We’ve been desperate to get on land so we went ashore for a beautiful bush walk to a trig station. The view was spectacular. It was time to head back to the beach, there we played hurl the hei hei which is a rubber chicken that we have onboard, and a game of camouflage. We headed back to the ship for lessons on navigation, weather, tides, points of sail, rules of the road and buoys and beacons. Massive learnings in preparation for their big takeover day. We finished up in Whangaruru with lunch and lifted anchor bound for Tutukaka. A lot of screams and cheer could be heard from the bow sprit as we ripped down the coast. We’ve still got about an hours worth of sailing left. Once we’ve set the anchor we’ll prepare the ship for night, have dinner, which is boil up, play ship games and share stories from our. Another full on day today, we look forward to a good nights sleep. Until tomorrow, mā te wā
