YTH2318 – Rā Tuaono – Day Six

We awoke this morning a little later than normal, as we arrived in Urquharts Bay in the dead of the night. We basked in the sun rays for our morning swim, and we swiftly made our way to shore to explore. The tide was out so we wandered around the rocks looking for crystals and crabs, then we went to check out the WW2 gun emplacement and observation posts, and learnt about the type of artillery that was used from Arihi. Our journey back to the ship took us past old concrete ruins, large cliff side boulders and a herd of curious cattle. Aboard the ship we had time for fishing and munching on the incredible baked goods, the caramel oat slice concocted by Lauren and the carefully crafted Russian fudge by Egor. After lunch we nominated Lauren as our Captain and other roles for the trainee takeover, and we set sail as a cohesive team out towards the ocean. It was a beautiful afternoon for it and as soon as we became becalmed we turned around and headed up the river towards tonight’s anchorage. We’re now anchored up at Motukohe, Limestone island, getting ready to go kiwi spotting tonight.

See you all tomorrow!
