YTH 1908 Wha Ra

Kia Ora from the R Tucker Thompson

Despite the disappointing weather today has been an educational day full of enjoyment.

Today started off at 0730 hrs straight into morning duties – scrubbing the decks, sweeping and mopping the sole, cleaning the head, and washing tea towels. After some breakfast we ran some lessons with the trainees covering Navigation- learning about the chart and plotting positions and courses.

After some learning we had a delicious hot soup for lunch with buttered scones and decided to take a trip to Waitangi treaty grounds to learn more about the Maori culture and the history of New Zealand and the treaty of Waitangi. While at Waitangi we had the opportunity to watch a Maori cultural performance and learn about the arts and singing and dancing. After some time spent at the whare we went to the Waitangi museum and also learnt more about the treaty and about what people were involved during that time.

With our brains full of facts and memories we returned to the ship and now are settling in. Some of us are enjoying a swim in the brisk ocean, some of us and do some baking and some of us are around the table enjoying some cards and banter.

We look forward to what tomorrow brings.
